I want to thank you so much for the wonderful care I have received from your office. From the beginning when I had so many problems, through my pregnancy, and finally the birth of our daughter, you and the staff have been nothing short of courteous, professional and very supportive. I always look forward to my visits and know that I am getting the best care possible. - Allyson P |

This week at Wellness Within we discussed all the wonderful and beautiful things that Vitamin D can do for you. The first thing we need to understand about vitamin D is that it is not a vitamin but a hormone. By definition, a vitamin is an organic substance that cannot be synthesized in the body. This will be different for different organisms but as humans, we can make vitamin D. Under the most optimal conditions, basically being outside naked on the equator at noon, you could make as much as 26,000 IU of vitamin D. Most of us don’t do this. The following is some information on why we are deficient, what deficiency can do to our bodies, and how we can treat it.
Why we are deficient:
What is too low:
What does it do for us: Immune Function:
Cancer Prevention:
Osteoporosis:
Autoimmune Disease:
Decreases Inflammation:
Other places it may work:
Supplementation:
It is so important to have adequate levels of vitamin D. You should not, however, take high levels on your own without having a level done by your doctor. A vitamin D level is a quick blood test and very inexpensive. Supplementing with vitamin D is also inexpensive, especially compared to the many health benefits.
